by Sports Xchange
Cornerback
University of Georgia Bulldogs
#23
5:07.6-185
Orangeburg, South Carolina
Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School
Jennings is a fearless pass defender who plays taller than his size indicates. He teamed with DeMario Minter to give the Bulldogs not only one of the fastest cornerback tandems in college football, but also one of the best. His natural football instincts are evident in his play, and he is the unquestioned leader of the Georgia secondary.
At Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School, Jennings was an Associated Press All-State selection during his senior season. He also earned All-Region Defensive Player of Year that year and was a member of the All-Area team during his junior and senior campaigns. Jennings was named the team's Best Defensive Back as a junior.
Jennings was selected to play in the Shrine Bowl as a senior, recording 45 solo tackles, 20 assisted tackles and eight interceptions, including one he returned for a touchdown. He also returned four kickoffs and two punts for touchdowns and caught 20 passes for 400 yards and three scores.
Jennings was part of head coach Mark Richt's outstanding recruiting class of 2002. He played in every game as a true freshman, starting three times at strong-side cornerback. He finished his first year with 32 tackles (18 solos), a fumble recovery, three interceptions and three pass deflections. He also gained 97 yards on five kickoff returns.
Jennings was suspended for the first two games of the 2003 season when he and five other Georgia athletes were arrested for marijuana possession. He has been a model citizen since his return to the field, moving back into the starting lineup on the strong side for the final six games (started seven overall) in 2003. He finished the year with 45 tackles (36 solos), including one behind the line of scrimmage. Jennings intercepted one pass and deflected two others while registering two quarterback pressures.
Jennings shifted to weak-side cornerback during the 2004 season. He started every game, collecting 37 tackles (28 solos) with two stops for losses. Jennings also deflected nine passes while intercepting two others. He also returned four punts for 16 yards.
The 2005 season saw Jennings earn first-team All-Southeastern Conference honors. He started twelve games, ranking sixth on the team with 56 tackles (45 solos), adding one sack, seven stops for losses and two quarterback pressures. He caused a fumble, batted down four passes and gained 79 yards with a score on four interceptions.
In 49 games at Georgia, Jennings started 33 times. He recorded 170 tackles (127 solos) with nine stops for losses of 34 yards, a 12-yard sack and four pressures. He caused two fumbles and recovered another while also deflecting 27 passes. Jennings gained 194 yards with two touchdowns on ten interception returns. He also totaled 110 yards on six kickoff returns (18.3 avg) and 16 yards on four punt returns.
ANALYSIS
Positives: Has a shorter than ideal frame, but shows very good muscle tone, good bubble and thick thighs and calves...Plays with good field awareness, showing a very good feel for anticipating routes, whether playing in the zone or man coverage...Shows very loose hips to turn out of his backpedal smoothly and close on the ball...Has good hand usage to maintain relationship with receivers through their route progression...Shows the range, burst and second gear to make plays on the perimeter...Has natural hands for the interception and times his leaps well to compete for jump balls...Will extend and catch away from the body's frame...Has the balance and pad level to gain leverage and uses his hands effectively to keep blockers from attacking his legs when working near trash...Has good knee bend and arm extension to stay low in his pads, wrap and secure as a tackler... Hard worker in the weight room and a good mentor for the younger players...Vocal leader who shows consistent effort in practices and games.
Negatives: Has a small frame with no more room for additional growth...Shows good aggression vs. the run, but is best working along the perimeter, as he does not have the bulk to shed and slip past blocks working through trash...Has been a good program performer the last two years, but does have a 2003 off-field issue that could be a concern...Shows good field instincts, but his low early Wonderlic score (9/28) indicates he could struggle some with a complicated defensive scheme...Times his leaps well, but a lack of height causes problems competing with the taller receivers for the jump ball on deep routes (also limited by a 29 3/4-inch arm length)...Has the speed to recover, but will sometimes get so confident in his closing burst that he will lose relationship with receivers (needs to maintain position tighter at times).
While lacking ideal size, Jennings possesses outstanding quickness and a closing burst. He is very strong for a player his size, showing solid tackling ability, balance and knee bend to deliver a thud behind his hits. He shows superb ball instincts, displaying the loose hips, fluid backpedal and closing burst to consistently makes plays on the ball.
He does a very good job of gaining position and staying on the hip of the receiver. He might struggle some vs. larger receivers on deep routes, but does a nice job of tracking the ball in flight. He times his leaps well and shows natural hands for the interception. He has a very good feel to read routes in man coverage and displays fine ball anticipation skills working in the zone. He is most effective when locating the receiver, utilizing his ball skills to keep the play in front of him.
His ability to read routes and maintain balance coming out of his backpedal is evident. He keeps his feet coming out of his breaks and is very quick through transition. Jennings also shows an explosive closing burst and the second gear needed to recover on rare occasions that a receiver gets a step on him.
He has no problems extending to pluck and snatch the ball away from the body's frame. He makes good body adjustments and times his leaps well to get to the ball at its high point. He is especially effective tracking the ball over his shoulders. Despite his size, when he hits a ballcarrier in run force, he does so with a thud. He does a great job of making plays in space and has that rare speed needed to recover.
For a player of his size, he plays much taller than he truly is. Jennings will take on bigger ballcarriers with aggression and is not afraid to mix it up to compete for the jump balls. With the NFL emphasizing speed and deep coverage ability rather than press technique, Jennings could be a possible first-day draft prospect.
