HENDERSON ON HALL BALLOT: Career steals leader Rickey Henderson heads 10 first-time candidates on this year's Hall of Fame ballot, joining holdovers Mark McGwire and Jim Rice -- eligible for the final time. Other newcomers are Jay Bell, David Cone, Ron Gant, Mark Grace, Jesse Orosco, Dan Plesac, Greg Vaughn, Mo Vaughn and Matt Williams. Just 23 players are on the ballot, the smallest group ever.

JUDGE REJECTS SALE OF CURLIN: A judge has rejected a proposed sale of the minority interest in reigning Horse of the Year Curlin. Primary owner Jess Jackson had offered $4 million to buy out the 20 percent minority interest from two disbarred attorneys.

8 BIG EAST TEAMS RANKED: Syracuse moved into the Top 25 on Monday, giving the Big East Conference a record eight teams in The Associated Press' college basketball poll. North Carolina (7-0) remained the unanimous No. 1 selection of the, while No. 2 Connecticut, No. 3 Pittsburgh, No. 7 Notre Dame, No. 11 Louisville, No. 16 Syracuse, No. 17 Villanova, No. 20 Georgetown and No. 25 Marquette also represented the Big East. ... Connecticut held all 45 first place votes in The Associated Press women's poll on Monday. North Carolina remained No. 2 after barely hanging on to beat Oregon State in the Junkanoo Jam. ... Villanova center Casiem Drummond told the coaching staff on Monday that he will leave the Big East school and transfer. LIONS SIGN COLBERT: The Detroit Lions signed wide receiver Keary Colbert, giving him a chance to play for his third NFL team this season. Detroit added him to the roster Monday when it put wide receiver Mike Furrey on injured reserve because of a concussion. Colbert was released by the Seattle Seahawks on Nov. 11, nearly two months after they acquired him from Denver for an undisclosed draft pick.
